FINALLY...

Hello! Yes, I have neglected the website, and I'm
going to do my best not to do that again! Life has
been crazy, and now that Madeleine is two, it's
amazing how time flies! She is such a great kid,
although facinated with water and climbing. Can't
decide whether she wants to be a fish or a monkey.
Either way, she's stinking cute! And way too smart
for us. She's a tricky kid, but that means she's
just like her parents! She's awesome. Wish we could
share her with you more often! Blessings on you
all! Kate

Ta Da!

Introducing our new basement! I know it was
finished a while ago, but we've just now posted
pictures. Its amazing! Apparently the church has
decided to re-do our laundry
room/bathroom/hallway, which is the remainder of
the basement. They were going to get started
today, but its been raining and snowing off and
on. Also new to the picture gallery are photos of
Madeleine in the snow for the first time this
year and halloween photos. I had to work at the
Fitness Club that night so we both had to dress
up. I was a bumblebee (you can't see my antenae
in the photo, sorry) and Madeleine was my little
flower. It was a lot of fun, lots of kids. One of
her best friends showed up as a pumpkin so that
was fun.

Madeleine and I are on our own this weekend as
Phil and April, the new youth intern, head up to
Golovin, Alaska (North of where we were at camp
this summer). They'll be back Sunday or Monday
depending on weather. Madeleine and I have lots
planned for the weekend, including getting ready
for Christmas, which means I'll be cleaning all
the stuff piled in the living room (left over
from basement remodeling). We are excited in that
my parents are coming to visit mid-December, its
been a while since we've seen them, well, not too
long, but long enough. We sincerely regret that
we cannot come down to the lower 48 for the
holidays, but between money and schedules, it
just won't work out this year. We are hoping to
get down to see Phil's family maybe sometime next
year, but that all depends on money as well.
Especially since Madeleine will no longer be able
to fly for free after March 1st. Guess you'll all
have to come up here! I was blessed to be able to
speak with my sisters in Ethiopia last weekend,
its great to hear about their adventures, they're
joys and even the struggles. I miss them dearly
but know they are in the Lord's capable hands.

Well, we are off to work now, so time to go fold
bulletins, love you all! Kate (and Madeleine)

Summer

Hey, all. This has been an absolutely crazy summer.
I can't even begin to describe it. We are both so
stressed out this summer, especially Phil. We are
in the process of having the basement redone, a
wonderful group from Colorado came and got it
started, a huge start, and now that they're gone,
there's a lot left for Phil to do. He's great, but
doesn't know a lot about construction so he's
feeling alone. The church is asking a lot of him
lately, on top of trying to finish the house, its
been a bit much. We really need to get out as a
family for a weekend. Maybe we will be able to
soon. On the upside, the basement does look
fantastic, but has a long way to go, and my dad
comes up this weekend. He'll be speaking at Alaska
Christian College, so we won't get him the whole
time, but we're so grateful for the time we're
getting. Keep us in your prayers! PS. Sorry about
the lack of pictures, we're having difficulty with
the connection between camera and computer.
Hopefully we'll get that all worked out soon. Kate

So much to tell you!

I am so sorry that I've really let the website back
up! There is so much that has happened since I
logged on last. Its been a crazy busy summer, not
that its a good excuse for keeping you out of the
loop. I'll try to update you as best I can! First
of all, and most importantly, I'd like to thank you
for your prayers and support regarding my Uncle
Cully and his bout with cancer. Cully passed away
on July 12th. He was able to spend his last few
weeks at home surrounded by family and friends. He
passed peacefully and pain free at his home on the
morning of the 12th. This has been a crazy time for
us and our family. On the 12th I was enroute to
Chicago for a family wedding on my mom's side, when
we got word that Cully, my dad's brother, had died.
So, that weekend was filled with much joy and much
sorrow! We celebrated with my cousin Heather and
her daughter Hayley and we welcomed Jason into our
family. My dad was able to meet with his sister and
mother the day they found out about Cully, and that
was a healing time for them. After the wedding, at
which all of my family was able to attend(except my
wonderful husband who had a youth event with kids
from our Anchorage youth group that weekend. Mom,
Dad, Sarah, Maren, Madeleine, and I all headed up
to the family cabin in Upper Michigan. We were
there for about four days and then all but Mom
drove back to Chicago. Madeleine, Dad, and I flew
back home to Anchorage to attend the memorial
service for Cully. We were accompanied by my
Grandma Mylander, Aunt Carolyn, and Uncle John &
Aunt Cathy. Cully's memorial service was on
Saturday, July 21st, a beautiful cloudless day. The
service was beautiful was well. It was evident that
God was a big part of Cully's life and that he had
impacted many with his faith and his positive,
accepting, attitude. We will miss him greatly, but
we rejoice in the fact that he is waiting for us to
join him in heaven!
Other things that have happened since I last wrote
on the website:
1. Both Phil and I had our birthdays for this year,
Phil turning 31, and me 28.
2. In June, Phil was ordained by our church
denomination. He is now the REVEREND Philip Paul
Cannon II. So cool! We traveled to Portland,
Oregon, where the service was being held, and were
met there by all of my immediate family (with the
exception of Sarah, who could not get off of work).
3. We have been blessed to have Phil's sister
Elizabeth staying with us! We were so excited to
get here up to be with us and we've had such a
wonderful time with her while she's been here.
4. Shortly after Liz got up to Anchorage, she,
Phil, and I headed up to Covenant Bible Camp in
Unalakleet, AK, a long plane ride NorthWest of
here. Phil spent two weeks at the camp, while Liz
and I were there for just senior high week. I had
the joy of being a counselor to a bunch of great
girls, and Liz joined a cabin as a student. The
week went great and we had so much fun at the camp,
getting to know the people and enjoying the beauty
of God's creation. It truly is an amazing place!
5. Currently we are in the process of getting our
basement renovated. Hopefully sometime in the next
week or two we'll have two bedrooms downstairs and
we can move our stuff downstairs as well as give
Madeleine her very first bedroom. I have been
saving all the Classic Pooh decorations and items
from when she was born so that when she got a room,
I could decorate it. I can't wait. It will also be
nice to have her bed out of the living room, for
added space, yes, but it will be easier to stay up
at night while she's not sleeping in the living room.
Anyway, I think that's my update for now, I know
its a lot to take in, but thanks for hanging in
there with me! Grace and Peace to you! Kate

At the Zoo

Madeleine and I went to the zoo last weekend, it
was so much fun, she made all of her animal noises,
it was so cute! She meowed at the tigers until I
told her what they were (they were far away) and
then she roared at them. We had a blast by the
black bears because they come about 5 feet away
from the trail. The polar bears were fascinating,
but never went for a swim so that was
disappointing, and the elephant was sick so we
didn't get to see that one, but all in all, it was
a great day! See pictures!

Sweet Home Alaska

Oh how we love it here! We miss you all terribly,
but it is absolutely amazing here. It is so crazy
to me how light its getting up here so fast! The
sun starts to come up between 4-5am and its still
going down between 10-11pm. Crazy! It makes it a
little harder to sleep until 8am in the morning
because it looks like so much later if you wake up,
poor Madeleine doesn't understand time yet, she
just knows its light out so its time to get up.
We're working on that! Some time this summer we're
hopefully getting our basement remodeled so we can
move down there. That should help with the light a
little. I'm so excited for that too! I think our
house is going to get painted this summer as well.
That, is super exciting because the paint job on
our house is really bad, its just been a LONG time
since it was painted last. It will look 100% better
when its painted. Any ideas on paint color (mostly
for those of you who've been here and have seen the
house). But I guess most of you have seen pictures
from the website (most recently the pictures with
the moose in the yard). I'm really excited about
the idea of having a room for Madeleine. Its so
cramped up here with all her stuff in one place.
When she has a room I'll be able to put her crib
and dresser downstairs and then we can put a
bookshelf up here with a few toys, some books, our
books, and then we'll have so much more room in our
living room. For those of you who've been here,
we'll then make our room upstairs into a guest
bedroom for those who like to stay with us (Liz,
that will be you, and Aune, I'm sure you'll be
staying in there sometime soon too). In our guest
room (it will be so nice to have one of those)
we'll have a futon (hopefully, working on that
tomorrow, freecycle.org is a wonderful thing), and
a desk and a wardrobe. So much fun. I could tell
you all my plans for the basement too, but that
depends on how much money the church can raise, so
for now, I'm trying not to dream too far ahead of
myself for the basement. We know there will be one
new window and some walls, other than that, not
sure. Anyway, just thought we'd give an update. I
can't wait for the summer though, I'm itching to
get down to that basement. Oh yeah, prayer request,
we're trying to find a shed that won't cost us too
much money. Believe it or not, but there are NO
closets in the entire house. They had to build a
place in our bedroom to store clothes. Its crazy!
So, we need a place to store stuff that's been in
our basement, like snow tires, bikes, gardening
stuff, extra furniture, christmas decorations, etc.
Ok, I think I'm done, hope you enjoy all the new
pictures and videos! Kate

An Exciting Day

Yesterday was so much fun! Of course, other than
the fact that Phil is out of town for the weekend!
He'll be back today (Sunday) though! Yesterday was
fun because it was filled with new things for
Madeleine. First of all she said two new things
yesterday for the first time!!! She said, "hi." And
she said, "night, night." So cute! What a great
kid! The other super fun things yesterday were
unexpected as well. On our way to the grocery store
we stopped because there were pony rides! I decided
that she's still to little to actually ride the
pony, so we watched, and she neighed. It was great.
After watching for a while we went and pet one of
the ponies. I wish I had my camera with me, but all
I had was my cell phone camera. I'll see if I can
get that on my computer, but I doubt it! Later that
afternoon I took Madeleine to the pool for the
first time. We were there for two hours! She had so
much fun. She wasn't afraid (she loves baths, so I
didn't think she would be), and she had SO much
fun. We went with a friend from work and her
daughter, and the four of us had so much fun. Its
been a long time since I've been in a pool. I think
we're going again this coming weekend. I don't know
why it took me this long to get her to a pool! She
looked so cute in her little blue swimsuit with
cherries (thank you grandpa & grandma mylander)!
Today, Sunday, we headed to work for a friend's
birthday party. I took some pictures of her and
some friends and just where I work so you know!
Hope you like the pictures!

Playing

Today we waited for Phil to get home from Soldatna
where he was at a retreat with some high schoolers.
It was a long weekend, but Madeleine got to play
outside for the firs time this weekend! On Friday I
stopped by my cousin's house to visit and she
promptly fell in a wet & muddy yard, so we stopped
that right away, but today, when Phil got home, we
let her wander around the yard for a bit. Wow,
could we see the wheels in her head spinning! She
was learning and discovering so much. She found
dirt, she found rocks, and lo and behold, she found
puddles! She knows what puddles are already.
There's always a HUGE puddle in front of the house
when it rains or thaws, which has been a lot
lately. We've been dodging that puddle for a couple
weeks. So, when we leave the house, Madeleine says
"water." Of course, now that she can say water
really well, the puddle's all dry. Oh the irony.
Anyway, she saw some puddles in the alley and
started to play, you'll have to check out the
pictures! It was a fun afternoon. We're glad Dad's
home. ps, Elizabeth, we love you, lots!

Easter day

Sunday was a wonderful day. After the services we
came home and just relaxed. I took a long nap, Phil
and Madeleine played, then we ate Caribou stew.
I've never had it before so I didn't know what to
expect, but it was really good. Phil's had it
before and he really enjoyed the one he made. He
also made frybread, and I'm definitely hooked on
that! It was really good. Granted, he burnt the
first batch so we only had one piece each, but it
was great! Today was Phil's day off so we spent the
morning running some errands and then Madeleine and
I went to work tonight. I've been at work a lot
lately, I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but my boss
has been really sick, please pray for her, her name
is Kasia. She's supposed to be back next week, but
she's been in and out of the hospital the last two
weeks. So, I've been filling in where needed. Well,
I've got a mostly naked baby wandering around the
living room waiting for her bath, so I should get
going. Nothing better than breathing in that clean
baby smell! So, goodnight and Easter Blessings on
all! You are loved, and missed, especially at
holidays! Kate

Easter

Happy Easter to our family and friends! We wish we
could spend the holiday with each of you, but we're
gonna have a fun Easter with just the three of us.
After both services we're headed to our house for
Phil's caribou stew. He's been slaving all night
getting it ready for the crockpot! There's so much
stuff in that pot. I'm excited. He's also planning
to make fry bread. He gets it during his trips up
north and loves it, so he wanted me to have a taste
of the bush for Easter. We're excited to have
dinner just as a family. I must admit, I'm
apprehensive, only because I'm used to big family
get-togethers. I have a hard time convincing myself
that even though its just the three of us, its just
as special, in fact, even more special. Something I
have to learn, something my wonderful husband is
teaching me. Anyway, with my family all over the
place, mom & dad in Florida visiting my
grandparents, sarah & maren in Seattle chillin',
and my brother Jarrett tromping all over Europe,
its a little wierd to be just at home. Regardless,
know that you are loved, missed, and thought of often!
